“Float Away” with The Greeting Committee

Sam Plascencia

The Greeting Committee is Kansas City-based alt band comprised of Addie Sartino, Brandon Yangmi, Pierce Turcotte, and Austin Fraser. The release of “Float Away” follows their latest single “Can I Leave Me Too?” from their upcoming record Dandelion. “Float Away” draws listeners up-close to the way our mental state distorts our self-image.

The message is captured admirably in a music video illustrated by Kezi Gabriella. In the animated video, the lead vocalist is shown through a series of emotional states. Addie Sartino’s cartoon self is found going through the whirlwind of life; including scenes of a home, bedroom, and a party. These locations were crucial in showing the character’s mental response as the spectator in her own life.

At times our daily lives can become motionless. Sartino sings how she has to pretend to be “happy just to be alive” so she finds herself crossing her fingers and counting to five. The dynamic use of drums and guitar alongside Sartino’s melancholy voice is what we admire about The Greeting Committee.

The Greeting Committee’s exhilarating sound and cathartic themes are inviting and honest. Together the band has embraced their growth and have shared their music since 2014. The group is now embarking on a new era with the announcement of their sophomore album Dandelion, set to be released on September 24.
