Kate Bollinger Tells Us to “Look at it in the Light”

Virginia singer-songwriter Kate Bollinger shares her latest Look at it in the Light EP. Following her previous self-released EPs, Bollinger has prospered as an opener on the road with Faye Webster, Jeff Tweedy, and Real Estate. The dreamy, yet soul and indie-pop-infused tracks within Bollinger’s discography caught our eye and made us fall more in love with her sound.

The singles available before the release of Look at it in the Light sets the scene for the rest of the EP. The singles include, “Who Am I But Someone,” “Yards / Gardens,” and “Lady in the Darkest Hour.” These tracks emanate the tender and experimental beat-driven theme Bollinger explores. Flawlessly, the artist leads with her subconscious to create melodic sounds, an open-ended process that she compares to dreaming.

The opening track, “I Found Out” begins with Bollinger’s soft vocals, transporting us to what's to come. Its gentle refrains welcome listeners all while capturing the essence of the EP. From start to finish, the EP depicts a deeper conversation the artist has with her innermost self.

“Look at in the Light” advises us to do just as the title track voices. The lyric, “It’s better to know / Than to hide in misery” serves as guidance from artist to listener. Though it ends with the expression “I try not to notice,” the track acts as a warm embrace of vulnerability.

To wrap up the EP, “Connecting Dots” is a moment of realization. The blend of bass, guitar, and piano beneath her voice makes a dreamlike concluding track. Bollinger devotes the track as a way to notice the little things to connect the dots of her nostalgic past.

The dazzling project is rich with complementary instruments, “I like being able to hear the bass, the guitar, the drums, the keys, and for each instrument to be playing a singular part that is good enough to stand alone,” said Bollinger.

Kate Bollinger stuns with Look at it in the Light. As recent listeners, we’re hopeful to see her continue with the sound we hold in high esteem. Catch Bollinger on her upcoming tour throughout the U.S., Canada, Europe, and the UK this Spring.
