MAY-A Echoes Messy Relationships on “Your Funeral”

Australian pop singer-songwriter MAY-A’s second 2023 release, “Your Funeral,” is a self-reflective and self-deprecating track about a doomed, jagged relationship and an inability “to accept the love people want to give you.”

This high-energy track starts cheekily, “She said she’s bad, I said that that’s my type though, she called me crazy so I said that I could like her, could be a mistake but baby you could be my typo.” The song continues with a sense of mutual wrongdoing—recognition that both people are bad for each other. “I only like what’s bad for me” and “I go for all the wrong types,’ says MAY-A, before finally explicitly stating in the second verse, “we’re bad for each other.”

MAY-A gets introspective in the bridge, which she describes as “the core of the song,” leading the track to a more vulnerable and gentle place. She gets personal, bringing a common fear to the forefront, “I’m no good for you, I’m only good in a small dose, too much if you’re too close.”

The raw, honest bridge is almost obscured by the energetic vocals and instrumentation, but the close listener won’t miss how much it adds to the listening experience. The listener is left to linger on this sincerity as MAY-A launches back into the punchy chorus, bound to have the catchy tune stuck in their head but remember the more profound ruminations on mutually destructive relationships.

The accompanying music video upkeeps the tone and energy, saturation and intensity, dancing and breaking down, kissing and breaking up. The vintage camcorder-style video includes shots of MAY-A with friends and romantic interests. The scenes incorporate dancing and spinning around in a shopping cart with colorful makeup, interspersed with the artist stripped back and having a breakdown alone in her dimmed bedroom. The music video beautifully captures the duplicity of the upbeat, carefree vibe of the release while still showcasing the truthful and emotional message.
