“partly cloudy” With A Chance Of joan

Jenny Sorto

For joan’s latest release, they have reimagined their EP cloudy into a new project titled, partly cloudy. Joan has created “chilled” versions of their energetic bops before, but partly cloudy takes the approach of stripping back songs and goes a step further by making them into something new.

Each track has been reframed into the context of a different season or time of day. It begins with “try again - sunrise” and ends with “brokenhearted - sunset”, sending us wandering from start to finish. Joan have taken a nod from Taylor Swift’s Folklore and transported us to open fields in the sunshine and forests full of fog. Their music creates a dreamy, cinematic feeling we’re longing for.

The track “love me better - winter” takes the original version that makes you want to get up and dance and slows it down to create an introspective song. It encapsulates the mood of winter while still expressing the breakdown of a relationship. Meanwhile “want you back - spring” carries some of the energy of the fast-paced original, but recontextualizes the emotion of longing for someone into a season of change.

Joan are a favorite here at Bad Wreck, but partly cloudy reveals a side of the duo that we’re in complete awe of. Their music is usually best enjoyed at full volume while driving with friends but as winter approaches this collection of songs is perfect for chilly evenings alone. With this EP, Joan has given us a fresh way to enjoy the songs we already love.
