Finding Peace & Letting Go: “Thank Goodness” by Hope Tala
Kamryn Bouyett
When it comes to moving on from an ex, we often strive to be the bigger person by letting go. Hope Tala captures this sense of relief and gratitude beautifully in her latest release, “Thank Goodness.”
Hope Tala or Hope Natasha McDonald hails from West London with Jamaican roots. Her style has attributes of R&B, pop, and bossa nova, a style of Brazilian music derived from samba. This year, her song, “I Can’t Even Cry,” was added to Barack Obama’s Summer Playlist.
In “Thank Goodness,” Hope Tala’s soft, soulful voice conveys her appreciation for finally seeing her previous relationship and for what it truly was, for avoiding them, and for never looking back. Her heartfelt and straightforward lyrics, “so you can do what you do … that says more about you than it says about me,” feels like confidence in her decision to just move on.
Despite wishing her ex well, the song’s swelling drum beats and verses of relief reveal that what she feared might break her left her feeling stronger. Hope Tala embraces her happiness. With “Thank Goodness,” she reassures us that it’s okay to stop making excuses and simply let go. This upcoming October, Hope Tala is embarking on her first mini-headline tour in London, New York, and Los Angeles.
